A bridge crosses a chasm and disappears into the forest near Baños, Ecuador. The countryside surrounding Baños is dominated by towering volcanoes rising as high as 16,500 feet (5,000 meters!), their slopes blanketed in dense tropical rainforest giving rise to the dramatic waterfalls for which the region is known. Roads cut through the forest and traverse the mountainous countryside, linking most of the falls. The local villagers cater to the many adventure tourists who visit Baños by renting bicycles, motorcycles and even dune buggies, or operating zip lines that will zoom you across the valleys hundreds of feet in the air for the best views of the falls.
