Albania’s Strange Architecture

The bizarre eight storey tall monument-museum in the centre of Tirana was built in memory of former communist dictator Enver Hoxha. The structure was designed by his daughter, an award winning architect, and Enver Hoxha’s son in law.

Initially it served as a museum about Hoxha’s legacy and after the fall of the communist regime it became a party venue. In 1999, the building was used by NATO and other humanitarian organisations during the Kosovo war.

The building looks dilapidated from the outside, with smashed windows, graffiti and rubbish but apparently one of Albania’s first independent TV stations is still operating here.
